Step Up Your Drawing With 6 Simple Shapes

As the age old saying goes, how do you climb a mountain?  One step at a time!  This is how I create my designs,  drawing simple shapes, one at a time.  In this post I will explore my simple drawing process and what to expect in my upcoming Free Online Course Draw a Shape A Day where I walk you through the basics of this process.

Six Simple Shapes

In my course, I start with just six simple shapes. From these shapes I then experiment and come up with variations on them.  I then work my way around the page, adding more shapes. This is how I drew my Mystic Garden Colouring Page that is pictured above and you can find in our Creative Circle (see below).  It really looks so much more complex than it really is.

You can check out which six shapes I use and how I use them in my online course.  In this post my focus is on just getting started with any basic shapes.  Start with shapes that you are drawn to.  So how did I get from a simple circle to the drawing above?

Divide and Conquer

When you tackle something complex the best way to start is to break it down into simple parts.  Start with what you know and start with simple  If you have ever taken a still life drawing class or read a book on the subject, you start by breaking your subject into shapes.  A dog, a cat, a person, become simple circles, squares, ovals and triangles.   We start with something we understand, shapes.  Everything can be broken into shapes.

Combine and Flourish

Once you have broken it down and have worked on the individual parts, then you put your new ideas together and see what you can come up with.  When you feel comfortable with each shape and the ideas you can do with them, then you can start to combine them into designs that are more complex.

I Bet You Can’t Just Draw One!

It is very addictive.  When you try one idea, another one will pop up.  Since the shapes are simple you can just keep drawing them and watch how they flow together.  Do not judge what you are drawing, just keep drawing and see what evolves.  This becomes your new perception and you will start to notice shapes in everything around you.  Once you do you will rush back to your sketchbook and pencil eager to try new things.
