Fusion Diamond Quilt Inspired Crochet

Fusion Diamond

Welcome back, friends! I’m so glad you’re here because today I’m sharing a fresh spin on one of our all-time favourite squares—the Fusion Square. This new version adds a playful twist and a whole lot of colour, and I’m calling it the Fusion Diamond.

This design builds off the familiar rhythm of those two double crochet groups, but with a dynamic new shape and layout that gives it a quilt-like vibe—almost like something you’d see in a patchwork blanket made from treasured fabric scraps. Each row in the Fusion Diamond features a new colour, adding depth, movement, and a sense of joyful layering to the square.

The idea started with a simple question: What would happen if I could shape a diamond right out of the Fusion Square structure? I’ve seen similar designs that lean into a kaleidoscope effect, but I really wanted to stay true to the spirit of the Fusion Square—keeping that foundation intact while building something new and eye-catching on top of it.

I’ve been experimenting with all sorts of colour combinations lately, and if you’re curious about how I put them together—or you’d love a peek at alternate versions and colour explorations—you’ll find loads of that creative goodness over on my Patreon. It’s where I share behind-the-scenes process, inspiration, and plenty of palette play.

I’ll be working from a Fusion Square that’s already completed up to Round 7. I’m using my usual 5.0 mm hook, along with a darning needle and scissors. With all the colour changes, there’ll be a few more ends than usual—but I like to weave them in as I go to keep things tidy.

Let’s get started and bring The Fusion Diamond to life, one colourful round at a time!

You can find more captivating colour combinations for your squares over on my Instagram and Pinterest.
I love sharing lots of pics of my colour experiments there!

Fusion Diamond Instructions:

Work the Base Square Following the First 7 Rounds of the Original Fusion Square Here: Fusion Granny Square – Perfect Blend of Classic & Modern Crochet

We’ll be adding four triangle sections—one to each side of the square—which is what gives this design its distinct diamond shape. These triangles are worked in rows, building out from the base of a Fusion Square that’s already completed through Round 7. That makes our next steps Rounds 8, 9, and 10, with each triangle forming one side of the diamond.

I’ll also walk you through how to work these triangle sections in a single colour. That version creates a more framed effect with a slightly different finish, since the rows are worked back and forth rather than changing colours each time.

Once all four triangle sections are done, we’ll finish things off with a full round—Round 11—to pull everything together. You can stop there, or keep going and build it out further if the creative urge strikes!

All these techniques are in full walk through videos – scroll down for those

So if you’ve got your Fusion Square ready through Round 7, grab your yarn and let’s get started on the Fusion Diamond!
