Welcome back to Lesson #3 in our Learn to Draw with Shapes. We now have two shapes under our belt and we are ready for a third one. We are well on our way to creating unique and fun flower designs. Let’s get going on shape #3.
In Lesson #1 we played with circle ideas and in Lesson #2 we learned how to add in the teardrop in various forms. This lesson will introduce us to a petal shape. This particular petal, which is my personal fav, is similar basically a teardrop with personality. It is a more expressive, free flowing shape which makes it so much fun to draw.
Learn To Draw Shape #3 – The Curved Petal
So we have taken our teardrop and given it freedom to move. We make this curved petal shape with a loose stroke and allow it to flow. What I love about this shape is it can be made to fit into any space you need it too. The curve allows it to be a flexible shape and makes a great space filler for your doodles.

These curved petals can be made in either direction and can be spun around for the look you desire. You will find you have a preference for curving them one way or the other, but mix them up and see what feels best for you. They are very addictive to draw, once you get the feel for them.
Spacing
-
- Use the same size of petal and curve in the same direction
- Place them around a centre point
- They can be right next to each other or spaced out from each other
Size
-
- Use two or more different sizes of curved petals
- Space them out around a centre circle
- make them curve around and fit into the space you need
