Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

Tools and Supplies:

Yarn: The specific brand and colours I used are in brackets

Med weight size 4

A – Blue ( Bernat Super Value / Teal Heather )

B – White ( Impeccable by Loops and Threads / Putty )

C – Green ( Impeccable by Loops and Threads / Green Lagoon )

D – Grey ( Bernat Super Value / Clay )

Hook:  5.00 mm  US 8 / H

Other Supplies:

Scissors

Yarn needle for darning in ends

Finished Size:

Finished Size: of sample piece – 9 inches  x 9 inches

Abbreviations

ch – chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – treble crochet
rnd – round
beg – beginning
prev – previous
sp – space
sk – skip
rep – repeat
col(s) – colour(s)
lp(s) – loop(s)

Special Stitches:

Single Crochet Decrease ( sc dec ): ( insert hook, yo, draw lp through ) in each of the sts indicated, yo, draw through all loops on hook.

Double Crochet Decrease ( dc dec ): ( yo, insert hook, yo, draw lp through, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook ) in each of the sts indicated, yo, draw through all lps on hook.

I recommend after fastening off a colour, joining the new yarn in a different area of the circle.  Thus when working in the ends, they are dispersed around the piece and not all in one area.

Mandala Crochet Square Instructions

Foundation: Using Col A, ch 4, sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Continue with Col A, ch 3 ( counts as first dc ) work 15 more dc into ring, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-3, fasten off. ( 16 dc )

Rnd 2: Join Col B with a sl st in any dc of prev rnd, ch 1, sc in same st, ch 1, * sc in next st, ch 1, rep from * around, sl st in first sc of rnd, fasten off.  ( 16 sc, 16 ch-1 sp )

Rnd 3: Join Col C with a sl st in any ch-1 sp from prev rnd, ( ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc ) into ch-1 sp,  * sk next ch-1 sp,  ( 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc ) in next ch-1 sp, rep from * around, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3, fasten off.  ( 32 dc, 8 ch-2 sp )

Rnd 4: Join Col D with a sl st in any ch-2 sp from prev rnd, ch 1, * ( sc, ch 2, sc ) in ch-2 sp,  sc in next dc, sc dec over next 2 dc, sc in next dc, rep from *  around, join with a sl st in first sc of rnd, fasten off.  ( 40 sc, 8 ch-2 sp )

Rnd 5: Join Col A with a sl st in any ch-2 sp from prev rnd, ch 1, * sc in ch-2 sp, sk next 2 sts, ( 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc ) in next st, sk next 2 sts, rep from *around, sl st in first sc, fasten off.  ( 48 dc, 8 sc, 8 ch-2 sp )

Rnd 6: Join Col C with a sl st in any ch-2 sp from prev rnd, ch 1, * ( sc, ch 2, sc ) in ch-2 sp, sc in each of next 3 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in each of next 3 sts, rep from * around, sl st in first sc, fasten off.  ( 64 sc, 8 ch-1 sp, 8 ch-2 sp )

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT RND 7:  There will be 2 sc worked into each of the corner ch-2 sps from Rnd 6. There is one at the beginning of the repeat and one at the end of the repeat.  I have marked them in red so that they are easy to see.  (see image above for visual of one repeat)

Rnd 7: Join Col B with a sl st in any ch-2 sp from prev rnd, * sc in ch-2 sp, hdc in each of next 3 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts ( skipping ch-1 sp in-between ), hdc in each of next 3 sts, sc in ch-2 sp, rep from * around, join with a sl st in first sc, fasten off.  ( 48 hdc, 8 dc2tog, 16 sc )

Rnd 8: Join Col A with a sl st in first sc of prev rnd, sc in same st, sc in each of next 8 sts, ch 1, * sc in each of next 9 sts, ch 1, rep from * around, join with a sl st in first sc, fasten off.  ( 72 sc, 8 ch-1 sp )

Rnd 9: Join Col D with a sl st in first sc of prev rnd, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each of next 8 sts, * sk ch-1 sp, hdc in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts, tr in next st, ( 2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr ) into next st, tr into next st, dc into each of next 2 sts, hdc in next st, sk next ch-1 sp, ** sc in each of next 9 sts, rep from * twice more, then from * to ** once more, sl st in first sc, DO NOT fasten off. ( 36 sc, 8 hdc, 16 dc, 24 tr, 4 ch-2 sp )

Rnd 10: Continue with Col D, ch 1,  sc in same st, sc in each of next 12 sts, * hdc in each of next 2 sts ( hdc, ch 3, hdc ) into next ch-2 sp, hdc in each of next 2 sts, ** sc in each of next 17 sts, rep from * twice more, then from * to ** once more, then sc in each of next 4 sts, join with a sl st in first sc, fasten off. ( 68 sc, 24 hdc, 4 ch-3 sp )

To finish off, weave in your loose ends, and block gently for a finished look.

This square will work with any size yarn and the appropriate hook size for that yarn.  This pattern is written suggesting a worsted weight and a 5.00 mm and the finished size reflects this. Different yarn weight and hook sizes will produced different results than pictured
