Shaping the Half Hexagon, Level Up Your Crochet

Hello everyone, I’m back with another crochet adventure! In today’s blog post, we’re diving into the world of hexagons, but with a twist. I really enjoy creating hexagon-shaped pieces, and a common question I receive is about how to make half hexagons.

So, join me as I guide you through the process of making a half hexagon using my Sweet Pea pattern. These unique shapes are the secret to achieving straight edges in your blanket creations. Let’s get creative together!

If you’re looking to explore more captivating color combinations for your squares, hop on over to my Instagram and Pinterest. I love sharing lots of pics of my colour experiments there!

Too make the Sweet Pea Half Hexagon, I’ll be using a worsted weight yarn, but you can adapt it to other yarn weights as well. Ideally, it works best with either a DK weight or worsted weight yarn. I’ll be using a 5.0 mm hook today, but I recommend using the hook size that suits your yarn and your preference. While yarn labels often suggest a 5 mm hook with worsted weight, I personally prefer to go up half a hook size when creating squares for blankets or garments, as it adds a touch of softness and airy texture. Feel free to experiment and choose the hook size that works best for you.

Just like the full Sweet Pea Hexagon, the Half Hexagon consists of 9 rounds.

In today’s tutorial, I’ll be using four colours: Medium Blue, Off White, Golden Beige and Turquoise. I’ll be changing colours with each row.

In addition to yarn and a hook, you’ll also need a pair of scissors and a darning needle for this project.

So, pick your favourite colours, gather your supplies, and let’s begin crafting our Sweet Pea Half Hexagon.

Sweet Pea Half Hexagon Shape

There are two ways to cut a Hexagon in Half.  Today we will be cutting it as pictured below, from corner to corner.  Instead of having 6 corners this piece will only have 4 corners.

It will be worked in rows instead of rounds.  I will be changing colours every row and always working from the right side, so no back and forth rows with this piece.  Part of the reason for always working from the right side, is to make them cohesive with the regular hexagon which is worked in the round and therefore also always working from the right side.
