One of my favourite things to do with crochet is to find ways to create beautiful textures using simple stitches.  In this Cobblestone Stitch Crochet Tutorial I will share one of those stitch patterns.  It creates a subtle and delicate texture and still has enough body that it can be used in a wide variety of projects.

It uses a simple two stitch and two row repeat.   This makes it easy to execute and simple to remember.

Read on to learn more about how I create this simple and versatile stitch

Simple and Versatile

This stitch works well with almost any weight of yarn.  In this tutorial I will be using a medium weight yarn.  There is a nice balance between texture and space, so even projects using bulky weight yarns look great in this stitch.

The Right Side of this pattern swatch creates a nice subtle and delicate texture.  The hdc and slip stitches created on the wrong side row are responsible for this.

The Wrong Side of this pattern swatch has a smooth feel, and a subtle design.  Useful for garments when you want a smooth feel for the inside.

Similar Stitch Patterns

When I play with stitches and come up with these ideas, I name them so I can keep them organized and use them for future projects. The name Cobblestone was inspired by the delicate “stonework” appearance of the right side of the finished fabric.

There are a few stitch patterns you may already be familiar with, that are similar to this one.

  • The Even Moss Stitch – This uses a similar pattern stitch, but creates a more dense and reversible fabric.  Where I break up the pattern with a simple sc row every second row, Even Moss stitch uses the textured row of hdc and sl st, every row.  This creates the same texture on both sides of your work.  The Cobblestone stitch on the other hand creates a nice smooth wrong side, which can be useful when working patterns for garments.
  • The Cobble Stitch.  This one uses sc only on every second row, just like Cobblestone Stitch, however it uses a mix of Trebles and sc stitches to create the texture.  This creates a more 3 dimensional texture, making the fabric a little thicker.
