Crochet The Mystic Gem: Stained Glass Art

Mystic Gem Granny Square

Today’s Crochet Square is another twist on one of my favourite granny squares.  I call this one the Mystic Gem. It’s got a rich, geometric vibe and a diamond shape right in the middle, which you might recognize… because that centre is actually the first 7 rounds of my Mystic Harmony Square! In the same fashion as my Fusion Diamond design, I have taken a square given it a twist and added some fancy corners onto it. It’s a little bit like an upgrade.

It’s has a stunning stained glass window effect, which is where the name Gem comes from. And the best part is it gives you even more room to play with colour. You know me—I love adding extra colour wherever I can, and this design really makes space for that.

I’ve been experimenting with all sorts of colour combinations lately, and if you’re curious about how I put them together—or you’d love a peek at alternate versions and colour explorations—you’ll find loads of that creative goodness over on my Patreon. It’s where I share behind-the-scenes process, inspiration, and plenty of palette play.

I’ll be working from the Mystic Harmony Square that’s already completed up to Round 7. All rounds will be the same except a slight change on Round 6 I use a ch 1 instead of a ch 2 between my single crochets. I’m using my usual 5.0 mm hook, along with a darning needle and scissors.

Let’s get started and bring The Mystic Gem to life, one colourful round at a time!

You can find more captivating colour combinations for your squares over on my Instagram and Pinterest.
I love sharing lots of pics of my colour experiments there!

Turning the Square into the Mystic Gem

We’ll be adding four triangle sections—one to each side of the square—which is what gives this design its distinct diamond shape. These triangles are worked in rows, building out from the base Mystic Harmony Square that’s already completed through Round 7. That makes our next steps Rounds 8, 9, and 10, with each triangle forming one side of the diamond.

Once all four triangle sections are done, we’ll finish things off with a full round—Round 11—to pull everything together. You can stop there, or keep going and build it out further if the creative urge strikes!

All these techniques are in a full walk through video – scroll down for to view

So if you’ve got your Mystic Harmony Base Square ready through Round 7, grab your yarn and let’s get started on the Mystic Gem!

Triangle Corner Sections Instructions for the Mystic Gem

For each side of square, count over 5 ch-1 sps from the corner ch-3 of Rnd 7, place a stitch marker in this center ch-1 sp.  This is the stitch you will be working your first dc sts into for Row 8.

These next 3 rows are worked from Right to Left on the Right Side of the work.

Row 8: Join Next Col with a sl st in the 2nd ch-1 sp to the right of the stitch marked space on Rnd 7, ch 1, ( dc, ch 1 ) 6 times in ch-sp with stitch marker, sl st in 2nd ch-1 sp to the left of the stitch marked space, fasten off.  { 6 dc, 7 ch-1 sp }

Border Rounds

These next rounds are worked around the entire square in the same manner as the Mystic Gem Base Square.  Stitches are worked into Row 10 from all triangles and also the ch-3 corner spaces of Rnd 7,

Rnd 11: Join Next Col with a sc in any corner ch-3 sp of Row 10, * ch 1, ( sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1 ) 5 times, sc in next ch-3 sp from Rnd 7, ch 1 ( sc next ch-1 sp, ch 1 ) 5 times, ** ( sc, ch 3, 2 sc ) in next ch-3 sp corner of Row 10, rep from * 2 more times, then from * to ** once more, sc in same ch-3 sp as join, ch 3, sl st in first sc, fasten off.   { 52 dc, 48, ch-1 sp, 4 ch-3 sp }

You can finish the Square here or continue to add more rounds as follows:

Rnd 12: Join Next Col with a sc in any corner ch-3 sp of prev rnd, * ch 1, ( sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1 ) 12 times, ** ( sc, ch 3, sc ) in next ch-3 sp, rep from * 2 more times, then from * to ** once more, sc in same ch-3 sp as join, ch 3, sl st in first sc or rnd, fasten off.
