Crocheted Coasters in The Round

You may have seen these cute Crocheted Coasters around, as they are all the trend in home decor these days.  Did you know they are really simple to make? And once you get the hang of it, you will be making these for all your family and friends as well as every room in your house!

In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to make nicely rounded, multicolour crocheted coasters, working our ends in as we go, so that we don’t have a whack of ends hanging at the end that have to be darned in.

Crocheted Coasters

These are beautiful done without an edging, with a nice fringe edging or a corded one.  In this tutorial we will be focusing on just the coaster.  Stay tune for more tutorials on how to make fringe and corded edgings!

Circular VS Hexagram Crocheted Coasters

Have you found when you make circular projects, they may tend to come out as hexagrams, with corners and sides?  When working in the round, if you are increasing each round in the same spot, you will end up creating this shape.  This is great if that is what you were going for.  But if you are looking to get a nice round circular look, you will need to move the increases around the circle in a random way.

In this tutorial I will show you how starting each round in a random spot will help us achieve this effect.

If you have alot of small balls of odds and ends then this is the perfect little pattern for you.   In fact to make this one I used less than 10g of yarn of each colour.  One Coaster with fringe uses less than 20g of yarn total!  My fav is to make a bunch of coasters and give them as housewarming gifts.

The Mock Stitch Join

I will be cutting my yarn at the end of EVERY round and using what I call a “Mock Stitch” to finish off.  This creates a mock stitch that looks just like the rest of the stitches, but lies above the first stitch.  It makes for an even and invisible end to the round.

It works as follows:

  • Cut Yarn after completing last st and pull through
  • thread yarn on darning needle
  • insert needle under two loops of second st of round
  • pull through gently and insert needle back into top of last st
  • allow this stitch to lie on top of and replace the first st of round

Watch the video below to see how this is done.

I start this piece using a magic ring, if you would like to see how I do this check out the tutorial for the Magic Ring Here

Darn in Your Ends As you Go:

In this method of making a multicolour coaster, we will be cutting our yarn every row.  This could result in ALOT of ends to darn in at the end.  So I will be showing you in this tutorial, how easy it is to work them in as you go.  This way they are all looked after by the time you get to the end of your project.

Round 7:

Join A with a sl st in any stitch around project, ch 1, * 2 sc in first st ( inc ) , sc in each of next 5 sts, rep from * 5 more times,   finish off with a mock stitch
{ 42 sc }

Round 8:

Join B with a sl st in any stitch around project, ch 1, * 2 sc in first st ( inc ) , sc in each of next 6 sts, rep from * 5 more times,   finish off with a mock stitch
{ 48 sc }

Round 9:

Join A with a sl st in any stitch around project, ch 1, * 2 sc in first st ( inc ) , sc in each of next 7 sts, rep from * 5 more times,   finish off with a mock stitch
