Learn To Draw Flowers With Shapes Lesson 6

Here we are on Lesson #6 of our Free Learn To Draw Series, and our final shape.  We have a nice repertoire of shapes now and next week we will put them all together to create a beautiful flower design.  So grab your pencil, paper and worksheets, and let’s get going on our last shape of the series.

Let’s go over the shapes we have done so far:

  • Lesson #1 we covered our first shape the Circle and it’s various forms.
  • Lesson #2  the Teardrop was our focus and we explored adding it to our circle.
  • Lesson #3  here we learned to get a little looser and more expressive with our new shape the Curved Petal.
  • Lesson #4  the Diamond was covered where we explored how to add softer curves to a traditionally sharp edged shape.
  • Lesson #5  the Wavy Leaf was our new shape and gave us a chance to get a little loose and curvy.

And here we are on Lesson #6 and our shape is the Heart Petal.

Learn To Draw Shape #6 – The Heart Petal

This is a familiar shape that most of us learned when we were young.  But did you realize how many flower and leave petals in nature use this shape as well?  It can be done in a symmetrical fashion or we can freeform it for a more unique look.  Let’s get going on our learn to draw journey

Freeform

This shape works well as a full heart shape or we can cut off the point and use it as a petal shape around another shape such as the circle.  You may be surprised how versatile this little heart shape can be.

Spacing

    • Use the same size of heart petal and place them around a center point
    • They can be right next to each other or spaced out from each other
    • Make them long and stretched out or short and wide

Size

    • Use two or more different sizes of heart petals
    • Space them out around a centre point
    • create them with a free form, loose style

Combine with Other Shapes

    • Use Hearts with cut off points
    • Place them around a centre circle shape
    • Try a second round behind the first round for more petals
